title: Set up the virtual play space
lead: >-
All recommended VR headsets support setting up a virtual play space (playspace, boundary, guardian). This is a defined
area in which the user can move around safely without coming into contact with real-world objects.

## Virtual room

ViRTUE's virtual room comprises the patient room and the hospital corridor, and measures **10 metres by 3.75 metres**.

Since the virtual room is usually larger than the physically available space, ViRTUE offers a teleport function that lets the user instantly move to any location in the virtual room. This means you can also use ViRTUE in rooms that are smaller than the virtual room.

> **INFO**: There is also a **compact patient room** without a bathroom. It is 2 metres shorter in length and therefore requires only 8 metres instead of 10 metres (without the safety margin). You can select the practice environment when creating a new session, see [New session](https://wiki.vrhandhygiene.com/ai/en/app/new-session.md#übungsumgebung).

> **TIP**: Outside the virtual play space, set up a table where the operator can use the PC that runs ViRTUE. For safety reasons, the play space should be set up with at least **50 centimeters of clearance** to real walls and objects.

## Room layouts

Based on the size of your available space, we recommend one of the following three scenarios. In all floor plans, **1** denotes the virtual play space, **2** the operator area with table and chair (outside area 1), and the **dot** the centre point of the virtual play space.

### Large room (recommended)

The user can move freely within ViRTUE without reaching the limits of the physical room, and can also move around using the teleport function.

**Requirement:** a freely walkable area of 11 m by 4.75 m (10 m by 3.75 m without the safety margin).

**Dimensions:** A 10 m · B 6 m · C 4 m · D 3.75 m · E 2 m · F 1.15 m · G 0.75 m

With the compact patient room without a bathroom, A is reduced to 8 m and C to 2 m.

> **TIP**: **Tip for the operator:** In the settings, disable the Teleport movement and Reset origin options.

### Medium-sized room

The user can move freely within certain limits and occasionally has to use the teleport function in order not to leave the virtual play space.

**Requirement:** a freely walkable area of at least 4.75 m by 7 m (3.75 m by 6 m without the safety margin).

**Dimensions:** A 3.75 m or more · B 3.75 m · C 1.75 m or more · D 1.15 m · E 0.75 m

> **TIP**: **Tip for the operator:** Instruct the user as follows: After the user has opened the room door and enters the patient room, they should teleport directly in front of the table located against the right-hand wall. After the patient visit is complete, the user should teleport directly out of the room to the starting point in the hospital corridor.
>
> In the settings, enable the Teleport movement and Reset origin options.

### Small room

The user can only move within limits and must always use the teleport function to move around the virtual play space.

**Requirement:** a freely walkable area of at least 3.5 m by 5.25 m (2.5 m by 4.25 m without the safety margin).

**Dimensions:** A 2.5 m or more · B 2.5 m or more · C 1.75 m or more · dot in the centre of the area

> **TIP**: **Tip for the operator:** Instruct the user as follows: When they want to move more than one or two steps, they should not walk but instead use the teleport function. When the user reaches the edge of the virtual play space, they should take a few steps in the opposite direction and then teleport to the desired location.
>
> In the settings, enable the Teleport movement and Reset origin options.

## Additional tips for the operator

Mark the centre point with clearly visible, removable tape on the floor so that the user can position themselves at the correct starting point right from the start.

## Setup by hardware

The specific steps for setting up the play space differ depending on the VR headset:
